Developing Your Player’s Ability to Counter Attack
When observing youth, high school, and college games it is obvious the overwhelming majority of goals come out of transition.  Free kicks account for the next largest percentage of goals; while, attacks out of a build up rarely lead to goals.  A team that is trained to attack cohesively out of transition can increase their number of goals scored dramatically.  Continue reading

Fall 2009, Coaching Education Newsletter #3

Coach,

In this week’s newsletter we address the technical issue of finishing and the tactical concept of inside-outside patterns.  Only coaches that have a membership to the Animated Coach’s Library can view the animated progressions.

Observation:
I have observed many practices this week that have focused on shooting and finishing.  Almost all of these practices had the players shooting at goal in only one manner.  Coaches need to vary shooting activities to allow for players to take chances at goal with the ball rolling to the player, away from the player, and across the player in the same session.  Shooting and finishing sessions need to also have shots taken off the dribble, off of a first touch, and off of a pass.  Continue reading

In this week’s newsletter we address the issues of passing with the outside of the foot and functional tactical training of the outside midfield player on supporting angles.  Functional training is coaching a player on the responsibilities of their position.  Functional tactical training concentrates on the decisions of the player in respect to their position.  Functional training is only recommended for players U14 an older.  Only coaches with a membership to the Animated Coach’s Library can view the activities in animation.
